Mitochondria

The  mitochondrion is the "powerhouse" of the cell and appears in both plants and animal cells. It produces most of the energy needed to keep the cell going. Food molecules that pass into the cytoplasm are taken to the mitochondria and  burned for energy. The mitochondria have an inner and an outer membrane.
